talk about football betting or basketball betting then you are dealing with
point spreads. A point spread is the number the odds maker comes up with
to tell bettors how many points the favorite is going to have to beat the
underdog by in order for people betting on the favorites to win their bets.
Let's take an example of a normal college football game:
Oklahoma -21
Colorado +21
Now there are a couple of different scenarios that are possible.
Oklahoma could win the game by more than 21 points and if you bet on Oklahoma
then you would win $10 for every $11 that you bet. Oklahoma could win the
game by 21 points, in that case all bets are returned as no action, this is
called a push. The last option would be if Oklahoma won by 20 points or
less, or Colorado would win the game outright. If that is the case then
everyone who bet on Colorado would win $10 for every $11 they bet. This is
a little explanation on how point spreads work in sports betting.

For sports such as hockey, baseball, and fighting the books use
money lines. While there are still favorites and underdogs, the winner is
determined by who wins the game straight up since no point spreads are used.
What happens is that the books want to even the action out in terms of money
given out to the winners, so because more people bet on the favorite you have to
risk a high amount to win less, while you bet little to win more if you take the
underdog. Let's use a baseball example:
NY Yankees -170
KC Royals +150
This means that you have to bet $170 to $100 if the Yankees win
the game. If you take the Royals and they win, you get $150 for every $100
you wagered. If there is balanced action and the Royals win the game, the
bookmakers will make $20 for every $200 bet. That is because they are
collecting $170 and only giving out $150. This is how money lines work in
sports betting.
